Singaporean students on study trip to Norway

Last updated: 09/05/2011 // 29 students from Singapore Management University (SMU) fly to Norway to visit Norwegian companies and experience Norwegian National Day.

The students will travel to Norway on 15 May as part of a study trip to Scandinavia. The university has arranged classes, stretching over three weeks, preparing the students for the trip, which will offer them a valuable international experience and add a cultural perspective to their curriculum. They will visit several Norwegian companies such as Yara, Opera Software, and BW Shipping during their stay in Oslo. The students were excited to learn more about the importance of cooperation between Norwegian and Singaporean companies. This is also a good opportunity for Norwegian companies to make the Singaporean student more aware of Norway as a potential business partner in their coming careers.

Last week the students were invited to a reception hosted by the Ambassador. Representatives from the Norwegian business and student community joined to share their insights on Norway. The students were treated to home-made Norwegian waffles with jam and goat’s cheese. They were shown a short film with pictures from all over Norway and were also given the chance to ask questions about everything from what kind of clothes they needed to bring to what do Norwegian students do when there are so few shopping malls in town.

On May 17 they will also be a part of the celebration of the Norwegian National Day. The Ambassador, Janne Julsrud, talked briefly about the background and the central elements of the celebration. All over Norway, there will be children's parades with an abundance of flags. The streets will be filled with young and old, dressed in bunad, the national dress, and vendors selling ice cream and hot dogs. Although 17 May is the National Day, any foreigner who happens to be in Norway can expect to be welcomed to join in the celebration.
